The Ocean Sciences Student Mentoring Program will be open to students on a first come, first served basis, depending on the availability of mentors. Applications for component 1 are now closed; sign up here for component 2. Component 1 mentees will be matched one-to-one or two-to-one with mentors. An important part of the mentoring program is respecting the views of your mentor, although they might be different from your own.
Benefits to the student may include:
- advice for applying to graduate school,
- suggestions of programs and/or advisors to look into,
- discussion of careers outside academia if applicable,
- discussion of content from scientific sessions,
- introductions to people who may be able to help the students’ career (networking).
Requirements for Mentees:
Students must be undergraduates (from two- or four-year colleges) or graduate students and be attending the Meeting in person, at least Sunday afternoon – Wednesday. Once selected, they must login and choose a mentor online by the program deadline. Mentees will be encouraged to communicate at least once via email with their mentor before arriving at the Ocean Sciences Meeting. During the Meeting, mentees will be required to attend a meeting on Sunday afternoon from 5:00-5:45PM in the Convention Center Rivergate Room where they will be welcomed, introduced to their mentor, and be reminded of the program guidelines. On Monday morning, mentors and mentees will meet from 10:00-10:30AM in the Convention Center Mural/Yellow Room to plan their daily interactions; they will be expected to meet once daily (at least Monday-Wednesday) for 30-60 minutes. This daily interaction could include going to a session together, attending a networking event, sharing a meal, etc. In addition, AGU will provide mentees with a list of Ocean Sciences Meeting events that they may wish to attend (with or without their mentors).
It is up to both the mentor and the mentee whether or not they wish to continue communicating after the Meeting. Mentees will also be expected to fill out an online evaluation survey after the Meeting.
