Area(s) of expertise within ocean sciences: Most of my work is on marine invertebrate and protozoan feeding and population ecology, including feeding mechanics, larval settlement, organism-flow interactions, and biofouling. I am also working on impacts of ocean acidification on invertebrates, and on the ecological impacts and management of invasive salt marsh plants (Spartina).

Interest in becoming a mentor: Since 1997, I have worked with and advised students at many levels (undergraduate and graduate) and in different countries (US and Australia), and I can provide a broad perspective. Teaching has always been an important part of my career, and I would enjoy mentoring a student when I’m back in the US for the Ocean Sciences Meeting. My experience includes teaching and doing research at an elite US liberal-arts college (where I was tenured, before moving overseas), major research universities (UC Berkeley and universities in Australia), research institutions (WHOI and various field labs), and a community college. I can provide perspectives on research funding from my experiences obtaining grants from the NSF, minor US agencies, and Australian government agencies and philanthropic organisations. I have much experience in publishing and other professional activities. In addition to academia, I have worked at a marine environmental consulting firm. I have been in Australia for the past 10 years, but I still maintain connections with the ocean sciences in the US. I can provide a current perspective on working in science internationally (especially in Australia), as well as my career-long perspective from experiences in the US.
