Current role in the field of ocean sciences: Post-doc
Area(s) of expertise within ocean sciences: My focus area within oceanography is trace-metal biogeochemistry, specifically focused on the marine biogeochemical cycle of mercury.
Interest in becoming a mentor: I attended my first ocean sciences meeting in 2010 as a new graduate student with little guidance.
Conferences are a great place for students to make connections and begin establishing their career path, but I’ve learned that they can also be extremely overwhelming. I would like to help guide a student through their first conference by helping them choose talks to attend within and outside their area of research interest, to build a manageable schedule for the week, and encourage their participation in workshops and social events. I have many research collaborations ranging from mercury biogeochemistry, genomics, trace-metal oceanography, and hydrothermal vent geochemistry, I think that my wide range of connections at this meeting and my past conference experience would make me a great Ocean Sciences meeting mentor.
